Mechanics of Singing

What happens when we take a breath?  

For INHALATION, four things happen and in this order:

breathe1) The rib cage moves out.  

2) The diaphragm moves from more domed to a less domed position.

3) The abdominal walls move outward (both the front and the sides).

4) The pelvic floor drops slightly down.

and

For EXHALATION, four things happen and in this order:

1) The rib cage moves inward.  

2) The diaphragm moves from less domed to a more domed position.

3) The abdominal walls move inward (both the front and the sides).

4) The pelvic floor raises slightly up.
